陈焕文（任达华），家境富裕，留学外国。返港初期，在父亲的公司任职副经理，但事事受到制肘，未能一展所长。更加上文一直立志从事教育事业，於是不顾家庭反对，毅然辞职，怀着一腔理想，加入教师行列。 文与世叔叶兆堂（冯淬帆）任教同一官校，堂执教鞭多年，工作热诚已减，处事但求无过，而文则积极进取，两人作风大相迳庭，因此时起冲突。 但事有凑巧，文因工作关系结识堂妹静珊（庄静而），珊清丽可人，文一见倾心，展开大力追求，却遭堂之强烈反对，加上堂子舜荣亦从中作梗，处处与文为难，令珊对文更有所顾忌，日渐疏远。 荣自小得父母疼爱，无心向学。後转读文任教的一班，行事越加放肆。文虽因静珊事对堂父子俩耿耿於怀，但仍悉心教导荣。惜荣并不领情，反而处处与文作对，令文啼笑皆非。。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
