解放战争时期，陕北延安。蒋介石匪军进犯陕北根据地，响应毛主席战策决策，部队决定暂时放弃延安，但保育院几十名孩子的撤离交给谁，旅长肖汉平（张勇手 饰）犯了思量。思来想去，他把任务交给了教导员李楠（祝希娟 饰），令她安全护送孩子们到解放区。这些孩子的父母都是我军前线的指挥员，有的已经英勇牺牲，老红军罗桂田（村里 饰）、陕北大嫂赵玉霞（倪以临 饰）等已为保护好这些革命后代倾尽心血。刚接手保育院的李楠，一开始极不适应，总觉得没有在前线打仗痛快，但她通过肖旅长、罗桂田身上所折射出的对革命根苗的厚爱，内心受到强烈的震撼......。Elena (Francesca Neri) and Ernesto (Vincenzo Amato) are a couple who are bitterly torn apart by the death of their only child.
